Gisteren bleef ik een hele dag op het eiland, vandaag trok ik naar Helsinki. Met de ferry naar het vasteland en dan de stad in. Doel van de dag: het designmuseum. Finland is immers internationaal gerenommeerd omwille van zijn design dus dat benieuwde me.

Er waren 3 tentoonstellingen. Een overzichtstentoonstelling over design, een expo over het werk van de Zweedse ontwerpster Jenny Nordberg en de tentoonstelling 'Designing with Nature'. Een aantal zaken troffen me. Dingen die ik las en die voor mij verband houden met 'Tracing Slow Life'. Hieronder (scroll down) vind je enkele nota's die ik nam.

Terwijl ik onderweg ben haal ik af en toe mijn 'Tracing Book' boven en doe ik een rubbing van een oppervlak. Zo registreer ik sporen van de rondreis die ik maak. In Duitsland, Denemarken en Zweden ging dat makkelijk buiten, in Finland niet omwille van de sneeuw. Daarom registreer ik hier sporen binnen. Vloeren, stoelen, tafels, muren.

Morgen opnieuw de stad in. Voor beeldende kunst. 

Ik merk dat de expo van vandaag me raakte in de betekenis van kunst en design in relatie tot het verbeteren van de levenskwaliteit. Ergens las ik deze zin: 'Overall comfort also improved, which had a positive effect on how everyone Felt. A question that is still relevant is how important it is to provide mental well-being with the means of design.'

Dat zijn de bedenkingen van vandaag.

Full Grown

'Using digital technology for prototyping and 3D printing furniture, that's way too easy. Alice and Gavin Munro took an alternative route. they grow furniture. In 2008, they planted three thousand trees. it took four years and much. trial and error before the first harvest of prototypes was produced in 2012. Since then, the couple has refined their products and established Full Grown, an organization dedicated to researching, testing, prototyping, and putting into practice agricultural design methods to shape trees directly into objects.'

'These approximately 100 objects need up to nine years to grow to completion. During this time, each develops an individual shape all its own. No two pieces are the same. The process of growth also brings out the idiosyncrasies of the different tree species used. While the initial plan was to grow four trees next to one another and join them to form a seat, the current crop are trees grown upside down around a custom-made frame.'

Travel as a Tool (een boek over een eerdere expo)

The exhibition Travel as a Tool examines how over 40 designers and architects from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden have incorporated travel into their practices, from the 1940s until today. The exhibition aims to show the importance of these journeys for the individual as well as for the precession at large, both in the Nordic context and in other parts of the world.' 

'The focus Is on the reasons for traveling, but also on the impact of these journeys -presenting the actual works, products, buildings or projects that were influenced by them.'

'Yet, there is a growing movement towards evaluation each trip and its environmental impact, which in the future might lead to alternative ways of both moving around and collaborating internationally.'

Ook voor mij is reizen een tool, een methode voor het maken van mijn artistiek werk.
